My law teacher said that the expression "don't drink the *kool-aid" came from this incident. The people committed suicide by drinking a fruit punch (Flavour-Aid) that had been poisoned with cyanide. They all followed each other to their doom.
* We use kool-aid because no one knows what the hell Flabour-Aid is.
